CANON PERSONALITY:
When you first meet Mikoto, he gives off the impression of being a confident, egotistical bad boy. It's understandable, since in front of others, he will shamelessly flirt with girls without a care in the world. Because of this attitude, he comes across as being a playboy who knows how to sweet talk any lady that he comes across. However in actuality, this is just a facade that Mikoto puts up to people who don't know him very well. His true personality is that of a shy, easily flustered boy that gets embarrassed at the drop of a hat. The fliratious dialogue that he uses to charm over the ladies? He becomes mortified at his own words and when no one is around; he'll be hiding in a corner from what he just said. Due to how shy he actually is, he's absolutely terrible when it comes to interacting with others; especially girls. Despite this, he still continues to put on that front. One of the last things he wants is to let his wallflower nature be known to the world, so he continues to act like a charming flirt whose goal is to win over the attention of all the girls as an attempt to be seen as a strong, confident person.
It might take some time, considering that Mikoto is generally uncomfortable around other people, but once you get to know him and earn his trust, you have a friend for life. He easily latches onto people that he's comfortable with. For example, if he is stuck in a situation where there is just one person that he knows out of a large crowd, he will follow that person and stick to them like glue. The process can be a painstaking one, though. Since he's so shy, even if he had a good conversation going on with someone, the very next day he'll be nervous around them and unwilling to speak to them. It's only around his close friends that he will show his easily embarrassed side. A way to instantly win his friendship is to compliment him, Mikoto practically thrives off of attention and compliments. If you so much as flatter him, he'd be willing to do almost any favor, even something he was initially against doing. He craves for attention so much that if he's ignored, he'll become easily depressed and clingy.
In the series, Mikoto does tend to play the role of the 'straight man', he has the tendency to get irritated at some of the other character's reactions to things. He's not afraid to call people out on their strange behavior, while also yelling at them in the process. Even though he has trouble with his own love life, he's quite perceptive to the romantic tension that's going on around him. He's fully aware about his friend— Chiyo's crush on his other friend— Nozaki. If given the chance, he has been shown that he's willing to help and has provided his insight and assistance. Despite this, Mikoto himself is too embarrassed to go out with someone. Instead of accepting a confession from a girl, he went as far as to ask his friends to pretend to be his fake girlfriend because he was so uncomfortable with the idea.
One of his defining positive traits is his passion for his hobbies. Once Mikoto becomes invested in something, he will put his all into it. Initially, he picked up dating simulation games in order to help him talk with girls, but he ended up sincerely enjoying them and since then; he's been an avid gamer. In the process, he also became an avid collector for bishoujo figurines. Mikoto takes his hobbies very seriously, he remembers any little details about the girls in his video games. He remembers what presents they like, how they reacted to certain things and even remembers their schedules in the game. Even though he loves his games and figurines, he doesn't want to let his so called 'otaku' nature be known to the world, in fear of being judged. Even though he's the farthest thing from being a normal person, he doesn't want to be seen as being abnormal. He worries about what other people think of him. Another example, even though he willingly helps Nozaki in drawing the details for his manga, Mikoto does not want it to be known that he helps make manga and is determined to keep it a secret at all costs.
Even though he gives off the impression as being a charming prince. His true nature is that of a shy shoujo heroine. (He was the basis for Nozaki's manga heroine) Basically, even though he doesn't seem like it at first glance, he's a hard working boy with pure intentions. He's far from being athletic and isn't the smartest but when push comes to shove, he will be willing to do his absolute best.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
While Mikoto can't draw things like humans, animals or backgrounds; he's very skilled at drawing the finer details. His specialty is flowers but he's also very skilled at drawing effects and embellishments in order to bring out a manga character's "charm point."
Mikoto is also very well versed in the language of flowers. He can tell you the exact names of flowers along with meanings that are attatched to each flower.
He's also quite skilled at the video games, particularly gyaruge games and RPGs. His long time friend and rival; Kashima has always managed to beat him at everything. The only time he was able secure a win from her was when they played a fighting game against each other.

His hair is also cut just a tad bit shorter.
AU HISTORY:
The Mikoshiba family originally hailed from Japan and Mikoto was the only child born to a middle class working family. His family come from long line of florists and has passed down the trade from generation to generation. Thus from the moment he was born, he had always been fascinated and surrounded by flowers. His father was the owner of a fairly well known florist among the community. Any chance he got, Mikoto would eagerly spend time at the shop and watch his father. He was dazzled with the way his father would make arrangements, but what made the young boy even more amazed was seeing how happy people were when they received bouquets and arrangements. This made him all the more determined to become a florist in the future, he wanted to charm the world with his flowers and make people smile just like his dad.
His childhood was fairly happy, he didn't have any family issues while growing up. The only issue he had was his incredibly shy nature; it was hard for him to approach people and make friends. Instead of going out to play with kids, he opted to either stay in the florist shop or play video games by himself in his room. He's always been shy around just about anyone, but he became especially shy around girls due to and incident one day when he accidentally blurted out to a girl that he thought she was pretty, only to be laughed at by her. Ever since then, he has especially had a rough time talking to girls.
Eventually, when Mikoto turned 8 years old, his family ran into some hard times. In a nearby super mall, another florist shop had opened up and it started to cut into his family's business. Soon, it became hard for them to make money and it was starting to get hard for them to live. It wasn't until a distant relative of the family, living in the United States, called up the family and told them about a empty lot that would be perfect to start a new florist shop. It was a tough decision for the Mikoshiba family, they have lived their entire lives in Japan and they couldn't help but feel guilty to start the family tradition in a different country. It took some time to think about it, but it was just before Mikoto's 9th birthday was when they decided that it would be the best thing for them to start anew. They packed their things and made the move to Recollé.
Mikoto was quite hesitant about the move, he didn't want to be away from his only friends and he was scared of the idea of moving to a completely unknown city than the one he was used to back home. While he was nervous at first, he slowly started growing accustomed to his new surroundings, especially after he started attending school in Recollé. He was already learning English when he lived in Japan, but since moving to Recollé, he became quite fluent in the language. It took some time, but he was slowly able to talk to others and even make some friends at his new school. It was during this time he picked up dating simulation games in order to learn how to chat with girls. However, while it did help him, the only way he was able to properly speak to a girl was to flirt with her and in the process, getting embarrassed of his own flirtatious dialogue. This unfortunately, ended up earning him a reputation as a playboy even though he's never actually gone out with a single person in his whole life.
It was also during this time, he met his best friend— a black kitten that he named Noa. One day, while Mikoto was cleaning outside of the shop, he spotted a tiny black kitten that looked like it was abandoned. Feeling sorry for it, Mikoto fed the poor thing and went about his business... or so he thought. The kitten kept coming back and would not leave him alone and eventually, he couldn't take it and asked his parents if he could take it in. Considering that he didn't have very many friends, his parents were more than happy to let him take care of a cat. So with glee, they happily said yes and thus, he started his inseparable bond with Noa; even if she does come across as being a fickle cat at times.
Whenever he wasn't in school, he spent any free time he had working his father's new florist shop. As he grew older, Mikoto became talented at making arrangements and learning the language of flowers. He also got better at talking to people because of chatting with the customers that came by to visit the shop. When he hit the age of 18, he graduated from high school and decided to move out to live and study on his own. With his cat— Noa, Mikoto made the bold decision to move to an apartment complex in Birch Hills and in the process, studying how to take over his father's business. He figured that it would a slow process, but in time he would be able to become the successor that he needed to be.
Or so he thought.
Things quickly came crashing down for the young boy. Just as soon as he turned 19, his father fell ill to an asthma attack. The cause was the difference in climates, Mikoto's father was so used to the weather back in their home town, that the change became too much for him over time. He was rushed to the hospital, only to found out that he did indeed have asthma. He was also told that it was best for him to focus on his health rather than over work himself and make his condition worse. Mikoto didn't feel like he was ready to take on the job of being a business owner, but he also didn't want to let his father down and see his health continue to deteriorate. Despite the conflicting feelings, it was a easy decision for the young man to make; he decided to take on the duties of being the owner of his family's shop.
Which now brings him to the present. While he has done a fairly good job of being a business owner, he still has some issues when it comes to his confidence. A part of him worries that he will never be able to live up to his father's legacy and combined with the stress, he still second guesses his decisions and actions. However, deep down he knows that in time, he'll become comfortable at managing things. Even though there was always going to be that nagging feeling of insecurity, he was determined to work hard and make sure that the shop will continue to thrive for years to come.
AU PERSONALITY:
While Mikoto's Recollé persona isn't all that different from his canon personality, there are a few differences due to his AU history.
He's a whole lot more confident in himself. While he still loves receiving compliments, unlike his canon counterpart, he doesn't need them to feel like he's on top of the world. Mikoto takes pride in his abilities when making floral arrangements and he knows that he's got the talent for it. It still excites him when someone strokes his ego, but what makes him even more happy is seeing a person's eyes light up when they look at his work, along with hearing that his flowers would be perfect to give as a gift to someone special. If his flowers can make someone else's day, then in his mind, that's all that matters. However, when it comes to girls and managing his flower shop, he still lacks confidence in those aspects.
Mikoto is also better at approaching people. Due to working at his family's shop, he's had to deal with all sorts of customers. Over the years, he's learned how to put on that "friendly retail smile" act and it's helped him immensely when dealing with people. When he's working, he looks and acts like a professional salesman. While he's still shy around girls, he has a much easier time approaching guys and forming friendships. If you have been a customer at his shop, or have spoken to him, he's much more willing to strike up a conversation. Contrary to canon where it will take some time to get to know him. He's still shy around strangers, but if you have met him at least once, he won't be as nervous. However, while it may take some time with girls, once he's become comfortable around a girl, he'll be able to talk to them like a friend, especially if they have common interests like video games, or liking cats. Otherwise, if he doesn't know a girl well, he will clam up and immediately start his embarrassing flirting.
Of course, the biggest different is Mikoto's skills and strength in dealing with flowers. While in canon, he only knew how to draw and could tell a person what each flower means. In Recollé, he's very skilled at florist work and stronger physically because of it, as well.
He also comes across as being more stressed. Like in canon, he tries to hide his weak side but on the inside, he's secretly stressing over how to be a business owner. He's constantly second guessing himself and his decisions. Mikoto wants to be just like his father and he wants more than anything to live up to that name. Another reason for his stress is his father's declining health. He is close to both of his parents and the thought of losing his father, who is also like a best friend and a mentor to him is a devastating blow. Mikoto won't outright show his worries, but should someone eventually get close to him, he'll break his shell and will let out all of his troubles and worries.
