Character Information
Name: Mikoto "Mikorin" Mikoshiba
Canon: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Canon Point: Post Chapter 94
Age: 17
History: Here is a link to his wiki but it's kind of sparse and only has details for volume one. So in case that's not enough, I have a written history with his role in later chapters and his current canon point.
Personality:
The best way to describe Mikoto is that he is a shy poser.
When you first meet him, he gives off the impression of being a confident, egotistical bad boy. It's understandable since, in front of others, he will shamelessly flirt with girls without a care in the world. It's because of this attitude, he comes across as being a playboy who knows how to sweet talk any girl. However, in actuality, this is just a facade that Mikoto puts up towards people who don't know him well enough. His true personality is that of a shy, easily flustered boy that gets embarrassed at the drop of a hat. The alluring, flirtatious words that he uses to charm over the ladies? The truth is, he becomes mortified at his own words and when no one is around; he'll be hiding in a corner from what he just said. Due to how shy he actually is, he's absolutely terrible when it comes to interacting with others; especially girls. Despite this, he still continues to put on that front. One of the last things he wants is to let his wallflower nature be known to the world. So thus, he continues to act like a charming flirt whose goal is to win over the attention of all the girls as an attempt to be seen as a strong, confident person.
While the precise origins of his shy nature are unknown, he has been like this for as long as he can remember. It does bother him that he can't talk to girls so three years prior to the series, Mikoto picked up dating simulation games as a way to 'study' and learn how to carry a conversation with girls. These games are where he picked up his flirtatious dialogue from since his research was from romance simulations, it's the only way he really knows how to approach girls. Throughout his 'studies' he found himself sincerely enjoying bishoujo games and it became a hobby of his. He even manages to graduate from 2D girls to 3D girls... in the form of bishoujo figurines. One of his defining traits is his passion for his hobbies. Once he becomes invested in something, he will put is all into it. Remembering what presents to give to a girl in a dating simulation? Yup. Recalling exactly what their in-game schedules is like? He remembers it to a tee. Same goes for his figurine collection; he puts a lot of work and maintenance into making sure they stay in good condition. Because of his hobbies, he's become a closet otaku. As much as he enjoys video games and figurine collecting, he gets embarrassed at the thought of someone finding out about his hobbies and he keeps it a secret from most people. The only ones that are aware of his secret otaku life are a very few select close friends.
Even though he's the farthest thing from being a normal person, he doesn't want to be seen as abnormal. Mikoto is the type of person that really cares about first impressions and maintaining a good image. He's always worrying about what others might think of him. The reason why he flirts with girls isn't that he's seeking a girlfriend, it's only because he wants to be seen as cool and confident in front of his peers. He's well aware that his otaku hobbies are generally considered nerdy to people who aren't into it and since maintaining a cool image is everything to him, he really doesn't want people knowing about his secret activities. This also extends to his role in helping out title character and friend, Nozaki with his shoujo manga. Despite Mikoto being extremely talented in drawing beautiful flowers, he does not want it known that he's assisting with shoujo manga in fear of being judged and looking uncool.
It might take some time, considering that Mikoto is generally uncomfortable around people he's not familiar with, but once you get to know him and earn his trust, you have a friend for life. He easily latches onto people that he's comfortable with. For example, if he is stuck in a situation where there is just one person that he knows out of a large crowd, he will follow that person and stick to them like glue. The process can be a painstaking one, though. Since he's so shy, even if he had a good conversation going on with someone, the very next day he'll be nervous around them and unwilling to speak to them. It's only around his close friends that he will show his easily embarrassed side. A way to instantly win his friendship is to compliment him, Mikoto practically thrives off of attention and compliments. If you so much as flatter him, he'd be willing to do almost any favor, even something he was initially against doing. He does tend to come across as being an attention seeker at times. If he happens to think he's dressed especially sharp, he wants to be praised for it. Sometimes, his friends see him as a pain to deal with due to his needy behavior.
In the series, Mikoto tends to play the role of the 'straight man'pfft, he has the tendency to get irritated at some of the other character's reactions to situations. He's not afraid to call people out on their strange behavior, while also yelling at them in the process. Even though he has trouble with his own love life, he's quite perceptive to the romantic tension that's going on around him. He's fully aware of Chiyo's crush on Nozaki and he fully supports it. There are times where has been a wingman for Chiyo and has provided his insight in order to help her. Despite this, Mikoto himself is too embarrassed to go out with someone and doesn't show any interest in going out with anyone. Instead of accepting a confession from a girl, he went as far as to ask his friends to pretend to be his fake girlfriend because he was so uncomfortable with the idea.
Because he's an only child in his family, Mikoto thrives on being seen as an older brother figure. It's been said that the type of people he has the easiest time getting along with are guys who are younger than him. This goes along with his 'wanting to be seen as cool' trait, but he does genuinely want to look out for his underclassmen. For example, when his class goes on a school trip, he kept reminding himself to buy Nozaki's younger brother a souvenir while he was there.
Even though he comes across as Prince Charming. His true nature is that of a shy shoujo heroine. (His personality is the basis of Nozaki's heroine for his shoujo manga.) Even though he doesn't seem like it at first glance, he's a hard working boy with pure intentions. He's far from being athletic and isn't the smartest but when push comes to shove, he will be willing to do his absolute best.
Abilities & Skills:
Tbh he's kind of useless
One of Mikoto's most notable skills is his ability to draw extremely detailed and beautiful flowers. His role among Nozaki's manga assistants is to draw special effects and embellishments in order to bring out the main character's "charm points". Besides that, he completely and totally sucks at drawing anything else.
He's also pretty skilled at video games? If that even counts.
Inventory/Companions:
❖ A black cat named Noa
❖ MP3 Player
❖ Portable game system with one of his dating simulation games
Choice: Puca
Reason: The Puca's freeze or flee instinct is Mikorin in every sense. When he's put in situations he's not comfortable with, he either completely freezes up or is quick to run away. Another trait that fits him perfectly is his dislike for isolation and his need to be in a small group. Mikorin clings to his close friends and practically follows them like a lost puppy. I also want to explore him being a trickster? Since in canon, he's a good boy that generally likes to follow the rules and I think it would be interesting to play him with that prankster side that Pucas have.
